What It’s Like

What It’s Like

The song came out in 1998 but, for whatever reason, it has been on rewind in my mind for days and if you have a moment and want a heavy dose of reality, it is well worth the listen.

Titled ‘What It’s Like’ by Everlast and yep, the words are kinda intense.

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it’s like
Then you really might know what it’s like
Then you really might know what it’s like
Then you really might know what it’s like

I know they say I’m a softie but, as Family and I were walking the city streets this past weekend, I couldn’t help but notice that guy with the homeless sign sitting on the corner and that girl with the ruffled hair on the train and that fancy looking couple stepping out of the limo and that intimidating group of teens near the bus stop and that loud person stumbling out of the bar,
and that …

Oh, stories.
Each and every single one of us has a story.
So why do we assume, why do we judge, why do we always THINK we KNOW ??
& why don’t we take that little bit of time to ask,
to care,
to smile or wonder or help ?
Nope.
I guess it’s much easier to look away and conclude
& wow
isn’t that just so darn sad

The song continues
and those people remain in my brain
& it’s true,
I don’t have a clue what it’s like to be you, just as sure as you can’t begin to know what it’s like to be me.
But if we simply TRY to figure each other out instead of surmising and inferring and deducing andandandandand.
Starting today, beginning now, I NEED to make the effort to understand.
