Reuben

Reuben

Pulled from waaaaay down deep in the archives on this St Patrick’s Day

Enjoy.

The Reuben sandwich is a North American grilled sandwich composed of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing or Russian dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread.
or so says Wikipedia.

I say ! ! YUM ! !
& it’s a beautiful memory too.

It was the day before her funeral.
Family and I were gathered at Auntie’s house, we had just returned from Gramma’s wake.
Tired and overwhelmed, most of us were squished in Auntie’s kitchen, everybody talking at the same time, laughter, tears.
I was six months pregnant with Child #3, so they sat me front and center, while Mom, Auntie and Great Aunt prepared a meal.

Reuben.

I had never had one before.
Why ?
Don’t ask me.
Apparently this delightfulness could not meet my finicky qualifications.
It looked funny, so I never tried.

What. A. Goof.

Chalk it up to baby cravings, but something about that Reuben on that April day changed my taste-buds forever.
From that moment on, it’s been love, Love, LOVE !

I adored the tag teaming teamwork of those little ladies.
Mom slapping the ingredients together, Auntie grilling to perfection, Great Aunt making sure everyone’s belly was plenty full.
The scurry, the noise, the affection and appreciation enveloped within those walls = absolutely priceless.

Fast forward to the day before yesterday and a knock on my door.
It was Dad.
! Surprise !
He had made some Reubens and wanted to share.
I gladly accepted and devoured
& yep
they are still as good as the very first day.

That sandwich.
That love.
Hits me right smack dab in the heartstrings, every single time.

Have I mentioned life’s simple pleasures really, truly are the BEST ???
It’s true.
