Watching Words

Watching Words

I stood frozen, listening to his vent, his rant, his disapproval, his disdain and I wondered if he realized how many negatives spilled out of that mouth.
I doubt it.
He was so darn busy talking tough, so in-tuned to his own self, I’m pretty certain all he heard or cared about was his voice, his thoughts
& most times, when our paths just happen to cross, I’ll counter grumps with positives. Determined to shower bright on the dark cloud hovering above his head, I’ll praise, I’ll encourage, I’ll joke, I’ll lift, but on this day, I stood back and let his words fly. Tired of fighting an unending battle, I closed up. An occasional halfhearted grin let him know I was paying attention, but with a slight break in the conversation, I made my getaway.
And as I found my way back home, I couldn’t help but carry his utterances
& I thought …

how many times have I let the pessimist take control ? I mean, I try my best to keep me on the light side, but yeah, there have been plenty. PLENTY of occasions where I’ve allowed my cynic to rule, sometimes knowingly, but most times, not. Oblivious and sudden ! poof ! there she’d be, all down and out and sullen
& talk about an anchor !!
Glum is sure an exhausting load to lug around.

URGH

But now ? Well now, I watch what I say and how I say it. I seek sunny. I grab hold of promising and I reach for hopeful and every, single time bleak shows herself, I politely escort her right out the door. She is not welcomed, she will not win. Happy owns my heart, happy is where I’ll be, happy is where I aspire to stay.

So. To my forever downbeat acquaintance and to all those bearers of bad tidings out there, I say …
have a nice day.

I KNOW I will.
