Long Distance

Long Distance

I’m not quite sure what’s going on inside my brain these days.
I’ve been spending an awful lot of time on Sentimental Street
& I just can’t stop thinking about long distance love.
Yep.
Long distance love.

I’ve probably mentioned a time or three that Mom’s hometown and my hometown are separated by 500 miles
& growing up, Parents, Sibs and I would take Summer trips to visit them.
Sometimes we got lucky and saw that side of our family more than once a year, sometimes not.
There was no such thing as computers and social media.
We communicated by land line telephone and handwritten letters.
But even though our visits were often few and far between, the love we felt was like no other.
I remember running up and hugging Gramma as one of my best feelings EVER
& fun with the cousins was unending.
We would spend two glorious weeks with those wonderful people
& when it was time to head back home, the chorus of cries pulsating out of our station wagon could be heard for miles.
But, through them I learned that long distance does not matter.
Unconditional love is always right there.

Traveling far to see loved ones was something my children experienced too.
Their favorite place in the whole wide world was Aunties’ houses, 1,000 miles away.
Hard to believe but, FaceTime did not exist for them either.
Phone calls, penned correspondence and the original version of email kept those ties tied.
But there was never a pause or hesitation.
Cousins continued cousin-ing.
Sisters continued yapping.
We all simply picked up right where we left off each and every time we were together
& once again I saw that long distance does not matter.
Unconditional love is always right there.

Mom, Gramma and many others I love are more than miles from me now
& I miss them so very much.
But each awesome day, some how, some way I am continually, consistently reminded.
Unconditional love is always, ALWAYS right there.

Oh Sentimental Street, thanks for the beautiful keepsakes.

🙂
